How to Create a Blind Transition with Movie Symbols Using Flash ActionScript

There are several transitions available to the Flash developer. Transitions allow you to transition from one Movie Symbol on the stage to another Movie Symbol. In other words, you may have element a on top of element b. By applying the transition to element a, then element b is revealed with a transition.

There are multiple transition options with ActionScript. For more information on other types of transitions, see topics, Fade Transition, Fly Transition, Iris Transition, Photo Transition, Pixel Dissolve Transition, Rotate Transition, Squeeze Transition, Wipe Transition and Zoom Transition.

Tutorial Elements

Movie Symbol with instance name transObj_mc

Movie Symbol with no instance name

Step One

Add two Movie Symbols of the same size to the stage and select the top symbol with the Selection tool. For information on creating a Movie Symbol, see topic, Movie Symbol Basics.

Step Two

Open the Properties panel (Cmd/F3 (PC-Ctrl/F3)) and type in the name transObj_mc for the Instance Name.

Step Three

Add a new layer called Actions to the top of the stack.

Step Four

Option double-click (PC - Alt double-click) the keyframe in the Actions layer to open the ActionScript panel.

Step Five

Copy/Paste the following code to the ActionScript panel.

import fl.transitions.*;

import fl.transitions.easing.*;

TransitionManager.start(transObj_mc, {type:Blinds, direction:Transition.OUT, duration:2, easing:Bounce.easeOut, numStrips:5, dimension:1});

Step Six

Test your movie by pressing Cmd/Return (PC - Ctrl/Enter). The upper symbol transitions to the symbol below.

Dissecting the Code

The first two lines import the transitions and easing packages into your document. The next line starts the Transition Manager and sets it's parameters. The type of transition is Blinds and the transition makes your symbol disappear. The duration length is 3 seconds and it occurs as a Bounce. The object is divided into five sections or strips. The dimension value specifies a horizontal transition.

More Options

Transition.OUT can be changed to Transition.IN to make your symbol appear.

You can specify the duration value. Bounce can be changed to Back, Elastic, None, Regular, or Strong. For more information, see topics, Back Easing, Bounce Easing, Elastic Easing, Regular Easing, and Strong Easing. The value for easeOut can also be set to easeIn, easeInOut, or easeNone. You can alter the number of strips and change the dimension from 1 to 0 if you want the transition to be vertical.

Going the Wrong Direction?

If the transition is going the wrong direction, try rotating the symbol.
