How to Add Glow to Movie Symbol, Text or Button using the Glow Filter in Flash

Glow effects create the illusion of object back lighting.

Step One

Add a rectangular object to the workspace with the Rectangle tool (r key).

Step Two

Select the rectangle and convert it to a Movie Symbol (Modify > Convert to Symbol (F8)).

Step Three

With the rectangle Movie Symbol still selected, open the Filters panel by clicking the Filters tab (Window > Properties + Filters).

Step Four

Add a filter to the Filter panel by clicking the Add Filter icon and selecting Glow from the pull-down menu.

Step Five

In the dialog box, adjust the Blur, then set the Color.

Step Six

Adjust the Strength and set the Quality to Low, Medium or High.

Edit Filter Effects

Once you add a filter effect, you can access and edit the values by selecting the object and clicking the Filter tab.

Filters and Flash Player Versions

Filters work with Flash Player 8 and greater.
