How to Replace a Flash Symbol with a New Symbol

Replacing a symbol on the stage with another symbol in the Library is simple with the Swap button. In this example we will create two symbols and then swap the contents.

Step One

Add a text object of the letter A to the stage.

Step Two

With the A selected, press F8 (Modify > Convert to Symbol).

Step Three

In the dialog box, name your symbol (letterA) and choose Movie clip for the symbol type.

Step Four

Add a second text object of the letter B on the stage.

Step Five

With the B selected, press F8 (Modify > Convert to Symbol).

Step Six

In the dialog box, name your symbol (letterB) and choose Movie clip for the symbol type.

Step Seven

Both the Library and Stage should have two symbols, letterA and letterB.

Step Eight

Select letterA on the stage and open the Properties panel. Click the Swap button.

Step Nine

Choose letterB from the dialog box and the content is swapped.

Handy with Templates

If you are working on a project that has a basic layout with several variations (i.e., multiple slide shows) this technique is quite useful.

Swapping Symbol Types

The best practice is to stay with the same symbol type when swapping. In other words swap buttons with buttons, movies with movies and graphic symbols with graphic symbols.
