How to Create Textures Using Maya Hypershade
The Hypershade panel provides a work area to create and organize your textures. It also allows you to view the various surface material nodes and select each node for editing.
Open a scene with a Nurbs plane (Create > Nurbs Primitives > Plane). Select the object and open the Hypershade (Window > Rendering Editors > Hypershade)
The top section of the Hypershade shows all the materials, lights, cameras, textures, etc in the scene. The lower area is the workspace. This is where we will create a terrain texture.
Add the following components to the work area by clicking the icons under the Create tab. 3D Textures Section (Crater), then Surface Section (Lambert). Align the textures with a slightly larger gap between the Crater and Lambert.
Middle Mouse button drag from the Crater icon to the Lambert icon. When the menu appears, select Bump Map .
Middle Mouse button drag again from the Crater icon to the Lambert icon. Select Color from the menu.
Double-click the Crater icon to access the setttings in the Attribute Editor. Change the three colors to muted earth tones.
Middle Mouse drag the Lambert texture to one of the lines of your Nurbs plane. Render your image. Mouse over the line connections in the Hypershade. The Crater color goes to the Lambert and the Crater Alpha (a grayscale version) connects to the bump3d.
