How to Render a Cartoon Style Shaded Fill Image in Maya
In addition to photo-realistic images, Maya is also capable of rendering shaded fill images and animations.
To use this feature, you must first enable the VectorRender.bundle plug in in the Plug-in Manager.
Choose Window > Settings/Preferences > Plug-in Manager.
Make sure both checkboxes are selected next to the VectorRender.bundle plug-in and press Refresh.
Add a polygon sphere and plane to the workspace by choosing Create > Polygon Primitives > Sphere and Create > Polygon Primitives > Plane.
Using the Move tool (w key), position the sphere above the plane.
Click the Render Settings icon, then choose Render Using: Maya Vector.
Click the Maya Vector tab and open the Fill Options section.
You can select between several different Fill Styles.
Shadows are activated by clicking the Shadows checkbox and adding a point light to the scene. Depth Map or Raytrace shadows must also be enabled for the point light.
Need More Accuracy?
Open the Appearance Options section and increase the Detail Level slider value.
Displaying the Lines
In addition to simple fills you can also add exterior lines or lines that show the complete mesh. To activate the lines feature, open the Render Settings, Maya Vector tab, Edge Options section and click the Include Edges checkbox.
