How to Add a Light Gobo in Maya

Using Photoshop to create a jpg file, you can easily define patterns, colors and shapes for your light source.

Step One

Open a new 500 pixel by 500 pixel document in Photoshop and draw using shapes and colors. Save the image as a jpg file in your Maya project's sourceimages folder.

Step Two

Open your Maya project with several objects in the scene.

Step Three

Add a spot light to the workspace (Create > Lights > Spot Light) .

Step Four

Position the light with the Move tool so it illuminates the scene. Press the t key to access the light's manipulator.

Step Five

With the light selected, open the Attribute Editor by clicking the Attribute Editor icon. Click the checker-box next to the Color slider for the light.

Step Six

In the Create Render Node box, Click Normal for projection and click the File icon.

Step Seven

In the Attribute Editor, under file tab, click the folder icon next to the image name and navigate to find your jpg file. Render your image. Increase light intensity if necessary to illuminate the scene.
