How to Replace an Object's Color in Photoshop

The Color Replacement tool is handy if you need to quickly change an object's color.

Step One

Open an image in Photoshop (File > Open).

Step Two

Select the Color Replacement tool and note the tool options.

Step Three

The Blending Mode defaults to Color to retain the object detail and texture.

Step Four

Choose a new Foreground color. You will paint with this color.

Step Five

For the Sampling Method icons, choose either Continuous or Once. Once gives you additional control.

Step Six

Set the Limits options to Find Edges.

Step Seven

Using the Color Replacement tool, paint the object in your image.

Colorizing with a Paint Brush

Another way to change an object color is to add a new layer and paint your object with a new color on the top layer. Set the new layer's Blending Mode to Color and adjust the transparency if necessary.
