There are several ways to convert your color images to black and white in Photoshop. If you shoot in the camera RAW format, there are a couple of more methods.

This topic explains how to convert an image to black and white; first with the Saturation slider and second by using the HSL/Grayscale panel.

Step One

Open a RAW image in Photoshop (File > Open).

Step Two

Make sure the Preview checkbox is selected and click the Basic tab icon.

Step Three

The first way to convert your image to black and white is to pull the Saturation slider to -100. Once you are finished, return the slider back to zero.

Step Four

To convert your image to black and white using a second method, click the HSL/Grayscale icon to open it's panel.

Step Five

Click the Convert to Grayscale checkbox, then adjust the sliders to enhance the image. Click the Open button to open your image in Photoshop.

Don't Forget the Basic Tab

You may want to return to the Basic panel and fine tune the Brightness, Contrast, Blacks, Fill Light, Recovery and Exposure.
