How to Convert a Color Image to Black and White with a Photoshop Adjustment Layer

 

 

Within Photoshop there are several ways to convert a color image to black and white. This method allows you to adjust the grayscale values and is a non-destructive process.

 

Step One

Open a color image in Photoshop (File > Open).

Step Two

Click the Create New Adjustment Layer icon and select Black and White....

Step Three

The adjustment layer dialog box appears.

Step Four

Adjust the sliders to modify your image.

Step Five

You can add a tint to your image by clicking the Tint checkbox, then click the color rectangle. Change the values in the Color Picker. Press OK to accept the settings.

Step Six

You can change your settings simply by double-clicking the Black & White adjustment layer icon.

Adjustment Layer Masks

The adjustment layer automatically includes a layer mask. Using the Paint Brush tool with black or white, you can paint areas that will be affected by the adjustment layer.
