How to Add a Smart Filter in Photoshop

Have you ever selected a layer, applied a filter, then a half hour later wish you had access to the filter settings to turn down the intensity?

This is the advantage to Smart Filters. By first creating a smart layer, then applying a filter, you can easily access the filter settings in the future.

Step One

Open an image in Photoshop (File > Open).

Step Two

With the image layer selected in the Layers panel, right click the layer name and choose Convert to Smart Object.

Step Three

The Smart Object layer should still be selected. Choose Filter > Filter Gallery and open the Artistic section.

Step Four

Click Cutout and adjust the settings to enhance your image. Make sure the preview icon is selected. Once you are finished, click OK to accept your settings.

Step Five

Notice that the Filter Gallery has been added below the Smart Object layer.

Step Six

To access the Cutout filter settings, double-click the Filter Gallery sub heading.

Temporarily Disabling Smart Filter

You can temporarily disable the Smart Filter by clicking the visibility icon just to the left of Smart Filter or Filter Gallery in the Layers panel.
