How to Draw a Shape With Pen Tool in Photoshop

Drawing simple shapes is quite easy with the Pen tool. Each new shape is placed on a new layer. The shapes can then be edited using the pen edit tools.

Step One

Open a blank document in Photoshop (File > New). Set the size to 500 pixels by 500 pixels at 72 ppi.

Step Two

Select the Pen tool (p key). Set the tool options to Shape Layers and click the starting point for your new shape.

Notice that a new layer has been added to the Layers palette.

Step Three

Click multiple times to define your shape. You can click and drag a point to create an arc.

Step Four

To close the curve, place your final point over the starting point and click. A small circle displays next to the curser when you are over the first point.

Step Five

To edit your shape, choose the Direct Selection tool (a key) and move individual points.

Step Six

Select the Add Anchor Point tool to add new points to the shape.

Step Seven

Points can be removed with the Delete Anchor Point tool. To change the shape color, click the shape icon, then click the color rectangle in the options bar.

Working with Grids

For precision drawing, activate the grids by choosing View > Show > Grids. Make sure the snap feature is on (View > Snap).
