How to Open Multiple Images as a Stack in Photoshop

Complex multi-layered images are quite common in Photoshop. You may have several individual JPG or PSD files that need to be combined into a single Photoshop document, with each image on it's own layer.

Layer stacks is a quick way to automate the process.

Step One

Place several images that you want to add to your Photoshop document in a project folder.

Step Two

Launch Photoshop and choose File > Scripts > Load Files Into Stack.

Step Three

Click the Browse button and select all of the images in your project folder. The best way is to select the first one, then Shift click the last image file.

Step Four

If the images have the same content and need to be aligned, click the Attempt to Automatically Align Source Images checkbox. This feature might be used if you have several similar bracketed images shot with a tripod.

Step Five

Click OK and take a look at the Layers panel. Each image is placed on it's own layer.

Smart Object Option

In the Stack dialog box you also have the option of opening the stack as a single Smart Object.
