How to Save a Selection as a Channel in Photoshop



Selections can be made with the numerous tools in Photoshop. Once you make a selection, it can be saved as a Channel, Layer Mask or converted to a Path.

In this topic we will create a selection, then save it as a Channel for future use.

Step One

Open a new document in Photoshop (File > New). Set the size to 500 pixels by 500 pixels at 72 ppi. Set Background Contents to White.

Step Two

Add a selection to the document by choosing the Elliptical Marquee tool (m key) and click-dragging in the workspace.

Step Three

Press Option/Delete (PC - Alt/Backspace) to fill the Ellipse with the Foreground color.

Step Four

Open the Channels panel by choosing Window > Channels.

Step Five

Click the Save Selection as Channel icon at the bottom of the Channels panel. A new Channel is added. By clicking the Channel icon you'll see a grayscale image. The selected areas are white and the unselected areas are black.

Step Six

Click the RGB Channel to return to the image.

Step Seven

Press Cmd/d (PC - Ctrl/d) to deselect the current selection.

Step Eight

To load your saved selection back into the image, Cmd-click (PC - Ctrl-click) the saved Channel icon.

Another Way to Load a Selection

To load your selection (Step Eight) you can also choose Select > Load Selection. Choose the saved Channel name in the dialog box an click OK.
