How to Save a Selection as a Channel in Photoshop
Selections can be made with the numerous tools in Photoshop. Once you make a selection, it can be saved as a Channel, Layer Mask or converted to a Path.
In this topic we will create a selection, then save it as a Channel for future use.
Open a new document in Photoshop (File > New). Set the size to 500 pixels by 500 pixels at 72 ppi. Set Background Contents to White.
Add a selection to the document by choosing the Elliptical Marquee tool (m key) and click-dragging in the workspace.
Press Option/Delete (PC - Alt/Backspace) to fill the Ellipse with the Foreground color.
Open the Channels panel by choosing Window > Channels.
Click the Save Selection as Channel icon at the bottom of the Channels panel. A new Channel is added. By clicking the Channel icon you'll see a grayscale image. The selected areas are white and the unselected areas are black.
Click the RGB Channel to return to the image.
Press Cmd/d (PC - Ctrl/d) to deselect the current selection.
To load your saved selection back into the image, Cmd-click (PC - Ctrl-click) the saved Channel icon.
