How to Select Object with Pen Tool in Photoshop

The Pen tool is a powerful selection tool for many types of objects. It utilizes common bezier curves found in most drawing packages.

Once a path is made, you can save the path and reuse it for future selections.

Step One

Open an image in Photoshop (File > Open).

Step Two

Select the Pen tool (p key). Set the tool options to Paths. Click the starting point for your selection.

Step Three

Move the pen to the next location and click and drag the handle to shape the curve.

Step Four

Continue around the object until you are back at the starting point. As you near the first point an "o" appears. Click directly over the starting point to close the curve.

Step Five

Open the Paths palette (Window > Paths). Double-click the path thumbnail to name and save it.

Step Six

With the path selected, click the Load Path as a Selection icon and your selection is made.

Navigation Shortcuts

To draw a precision path, zoom in or out on the image (Cmd/+ or Cmd/- (PC-Ctrl/+ or Ctrl/ -)). Use the Spacebar to navigate throughout the image.

Path Adjustments

Once you have drawn the path, you can move the points and fine-tune the curve using the Direct Selection tool (a key).
